Jacob Philipp Hackert is one of the prominent representatives of German classicism. He initially learned painting from his uncle but later gained admission to the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. He was a student of Johann Gottlieb Glume. He worked in Stralsund and on the island of Rügen, which often appeared in his canvases. He traveled to Stockholm and Paris and befriended the French painter Claude Joseph Vernet and Johann Georg Wilhelm, renowned landscape artists. In 1768, Jacob Philipp moved to Rome, where he gained considerable fame. He was commissioned by Empress Catherine to paint a series of paintings depicting the victorious battle of the Russian army over the Turks. The painter also formed friendships with Wilhelm Tischbein and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Hackert is primarily known for genre painting depicting seaports, hunting scenes, and landscapes.
