Leonardo da Vinci - Renaissance man

Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519) is a Renaissance man: painter, draughtsman, scientist and philosopher. Fifteen of the master's paintings have been preserved to this day (the authorship of several of the canvases is uncertain); the artist also left hundreds of drawings and sketches. As a Renaissance scientist, Leonardo had a wide range of interests, dealing with geometry, hydraulics and anatomy, among others (the famous drawing 'Vitruvian Man' is a testament to this). In his paintings, Leonardo da Vinci used geometrical discoveries to create the composition of his works, so we can admire their harmony and perfect perspective. He left numerous notes documenting scientific experiments and invention projects, notes made in mirror script, which has intrigued scholars for centuries. His curiosity about the world and scientific inquisitiveness left Leonardo with little time to practise painting, which he nevertheless considered the noblest of the arts. His most famous works include the 'Last Supper' fresco of the monastery at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, the 'Mona Lisa', the 'Lady with an Ermine', the 'Vitruvian Man', 'John the Baptist' and anatomical sketches. Leonardo da Vinci worked for some of the greatest European families, including the Sforzas and the Medici. Due to the different periods in Leonardo da Vinci's life, his work is divided into the Florentine, Milanese and Roman periods. The figure of Leonardo da Vinci, as well as his work, has left a huge impact on art, science and the work of subsequent generations of artists.

Leonardo da Vinci's most famous masterpieces

Leonardo da Vinci's most famous masterpieces are undoubtedly the "Mona Lisa" and the "Last Supper", which is not actually a painting but a fresco made in the refectory of the monastery at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. "The Last Supper" is admired for its depiction of detail, perfect preservation of proportions and the effect of depth. The work depicts the moment of the Last Supper, in which Jesus announces to the Apostles that one of them will betray him. Leonardo da Vinci perfectly portrayed the emotions of the gathered people. Another well-known work by Leonardo da Vinci is the 'Mona Lisa'. The portrait of the woman arouses emotion and speculation - who the person depicted is and what lies behind her mysterious smile. Considered one of the most famous masterpieces of art painting, the 'Mona Lisa' painting continues to fascinate to this day. Another work by Leonardo da Vinci, 'Lady with an Ermine', is particularly close to Poland, as it is currently housed in the Princes Czartoryski Museum in Krakow. The person depicted in the painting is Cecilia Gallerani, wife of Louis Sforza. The ermine that the figure model is holding has a symbolic dimension. Louis Sforza bore this nickname due to his possession of the Order of the ermine. The held animal is meant to cover the model's pregnancy and, at the same time, symbolise the heir of Louis Sforza. This interpretation is based on the theory of the existence of symbolic and allegorical elements in Leonardo da Vinci's painting. Both the "Last Supper" "Mona Lisa", "Lady with an Ermine" and other da Vinci artworks ("St. John the Baptist", "Madonna in the Grotto", "La Belle Ferronière") can be ordered in the bimago gallery as reproduction paintings.
