Karl Larsson was a painter and architect who lived in Sweden at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He created oil paintings, watercolors and frescoes decorating the walls of the Stockholm Nationalmuseum.
He gained great popularity thanks to working together with his wife on decorating their home. The couple designed all the interiors and most of the furniture and accessories on their own. Larsson, in turn, made watercolors illustrating the rooms of the house and presented them to the world in the published book "Ett hem", or "At home". Their designs had a huge impact on the formation of the modern Swedish style in architecture and interior design.
Their home, Lilla Hyttnäs, became the inspiration for Ingvar Kaprad, the creator of the world-famous Swedish furniture and accessories store.
Despite his penchant for seemingly light and pleasant subjects, Larsson's most famous work is the painting Midvinterblot, depicting a sacrifice made on the day of the winter solstice. The author himself also considered this painting to be his life's work.
